Design Thinking is a mindset, a set of tools / techniques that allow individuals to build their creative confidence through a process / set of steps that is not linear; one that encourages / supports / facilitates a deeper, more robust, transparent, honest and open thinking mode of operating; allowing for the evaluation of highly complex problems (wicked), current situations, historical influences and contemporary issues be they product / service / people or process orientated; all while collaborating, cooperating, sharing experiences, knowledge, insights, observations within an organisational culture that embraces diversity, encourages change and the numerous challenges that it can bring with the overall goal of innovation.
Design is of course a very big term it means many things to many people, design is ultimately about improving life and really puts the human experience into the center of everything that we do. It is an essential approach to really challenging the status quo and trying to improve or innovate around how should we live, how should we do business. The danger in day-to-day practices is that we just make assumptions about what we think is the problem, that we let our biases come through. With design thinking we're challenging ourselves to be open and we're actually working together with industry partners. Students actually get to understand the context and their task is then by applying the design thinking process to come up with ideas and solutions for the industry partner.
Students are being exposed to the managers of that organizations, their customers where students actually get the chance to even present to the organization and get real-life feedback. At the very beginning of the semester we want our students to meet each other so we're going to be using a lot of post-it notes and butcher paper and we're going to be quite creative. All of us have a creative potential that just needs to be triggered a little bit. What we do here really prepares and equips the students to go out, start seeing the world differently and have the courage, the creativity and the curiosity to bring about change.
